Record-Breaking March: Tesla Model Y Leads Surge in UK Electric Vehicle Sales

by Evgoxmods 13 Mar 2024

New data from the U.K. reveals that March witnessed record-breaking electric vehicle (EV) sales, marking the region's strongest month for sustainable powertrain adoption to date. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported a surge in new vehicle registrations, reaching a total of 287,825 units for Q1, with March alone contributing 46,626 registrations—an all-time high for EV adoption in a single month.

This March registration surge represents an 18.6% growth compared to the same month in 2022, underscoring the sustained and growing interest of U.K. drivers in electric vehicles. Mike Hawes, CEO of the SMMT, noted that while consumer interest is at an ideal level, the critical bottleneck for more widespread EV adoption remains charging points.

Hawes emphasized, "The best month ever for zero-emission vehicles is reflective of increased consumer choice and improved availability, but for EV market ambitions and regulation to be met, infrastructure investment must catch up."

The SMMT believes that meeting the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate, effective at the end of the year, is contingent on increased infrastructure investment. Notably, the Tesla Model Y led the overall sales figures in March with 8,123 registrations, surpassing other contenders like the Nissan Juke (7,532) and Nissan Qashqai (6,755). In 2023, the Model Y stands as the fourth best-selling vehicle in the U.K. with 9,953 registrations, and its outstanding performance in March alone would rank it as the ninth-best-selling car for the entire year.
